Volunteer Services for Animals (VSA) is Rhode Island’s largest volunteer run organization dedicated to animal well-being and the promotion of the human animal bond. Our mission is expressed through programs of education, advocacy and assistance. Spaying and neutering companion animals to reduce pet overpopulation and euthanasia is our focus.

VSA is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization and is tax exempt. We receive no Federal, State or municipal funding and rely solely on private donations, grants and bequests to fund our programs and services.

This year, the General Assembly passed important legislation to help end the needless killing of cats in Rhode Island. Senator John J. Tassoni Jr. and Representative Charlene Lima sponsored mandatory spay/neuter for cats legislation and it passed with bi-partisan support in both the House and Senate. The Governor signed the bills into law in January. Volunteer Services for Animals was there throughout the legislative session meeting with and educating Legislators on the importance of these bills and why they needed to be passed. Rhode Island is the first state in the nation to have a mandatory cat spay/neuter law!

Did you know that 2,141 cats were killed in RI animal shelters in 2004? The number is higher because not all shelters reported how many cats they killed to DEM. Too many cats are dying in animal shelters and out on the streets. Spaying and neutering saves lives.

Volunteer Services for Animals has a low-income cat spay/neuter clinic and sponsors low cost mobile clinics in an effort to help end cat overpopulation and assist residents in complying with the new law.
