VSA currently provides pet-assisted therapy programs to more than forty agencies in Rhode Island. Nearly sixty volunteers and their pets visit a variety of venues, including hospitals and nursing homes, where the animals spend time with patients and residents, adding some joy to their days.

All pet-assisted therapy volunteers receive thorough training. Some volunteers have been in the program for more than fifteen years, while new participants continually join to advocate and strengthen the human and animal companion bond. The pets accompanying the volunteers must be certified as healthy, personable, and temperamentally suited for the program.

The list of agencies seeking pet-assisted therapy is always growing, and volunteers are needed to meet the demand. If you are interested in volunteering for at least one hour a month and your pet has the appropriate personality traits required of a therapy animal, call 401-273-0358 to learn more about the program or to apply for admission as a volunteer.
